What to see in Brive?
Visit Brive and enjoy all its charms. Stroll through its narrow streets lined with private mansions and pretty buildings (the Collège des Doctrinaires or the Maison Cavaignac).
Stop at the Place du 14 juillet, just a stone's throw from our hotel in Brive with swimming pool, and admire this strange lighthouse-water tower built in the 19th century and listed as a Historic Monument in 1984.
Then go to the town's market, much loved and sung about by Brassens. You will find there all the excellent products of the Gaillard region: truffles, mushrooms, walnuts, apples from the Limousin...
If you like religious buildings, don't miss the collegiate church of Saint-Martin, which is located near the Brit Hotel in Brive-la-Gaillarde. Built in the 12th century, it is a fine example of Romanesque architecture. The Grottes de Saint-Antoine are also worth a visit. A place of pilgrimage and walking (Saint Anthony of Padua meditated there in 1226), they offer a very nice view of the town of Brive. Finally, the 14th century Gothic-style Chapel of Saint-Libéral hosts exhibitions throughout the year.
On a cultural level, two museums should be visited: the Museum of Art and History, located in the Hôtel Labenche (Renaissance style), and the Edmond Michelet Museum of the Resistance and Deportation, located in the house of the former minister. The Garage, a contemporary art centre, offers cultural activities throughout the year. The municipal theatre, with its beautiful building, hosts many shows.
